100 I'm king of the world! TITANIC 1997
Here are a few to start off:
"I am your father" THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK 1980
"My name is Inigo Montoya. You kill my father. Prepare to die." THE PRINCESS BRIDE 1987
"It's going to be a long night . . . And I don't particularly like the book I've started." NORTH BY NORTHWEST 1959
12 Comments:
I was very disappointed that there were no lines from Princess Bride on the list.
Maggie
"I have a bad feeling about this" in every Star Wars Movie.
If Dale Price (Dyspeptic Mutterings) were here, I have a feeling he would offer this one:
"Relax, all right? My old man is a television repairman. He's got this ultimate set of tools. I can fix it."
---Fast Times At Ridgemont High (1982).
Here are a few of mine:
And I guess that was your accomplice in the woodchipper. FARGO 1996
I apologize... for not being entirely honest with you. I apologize for not revealing my true feelings. I apologize, sir, for not telling you sooner that you're a degenerate, sadistic old man. And you can go to hell before I apologize to you now or ever again! PATHS OF GLORY, 1957
"Good, better, best, bested." How do you like that for a declension? WHO'S AFRAID OF VIRGINIA WOOLF? 1966
You're all flops. I am the Earth Mother, and you are all flops. WHO'S AFRAID OF VIRGINIA WOOLF? 1966
Three thousand years of beautiful tradition, from Moses to Sandy Koufax, you're goddamn right I'm living in the past! THE BIG LEBOWSKI 1998
(There are a ton of great quotes from that movie that are probably worded a little too strongly for polite company.)
And I know this isn't quite fair, since the AFI list is all quotes from English-language films, but I really do think this is a great quote from one of the greatest films of all time:
Happiness is where people understand you. WE'LL LIVE UNTIL MONDAY (USSR 1968)
Don't forget this one from Ferris Bueller's Day Off, 1986:
Life moves pretty fast. If you don't stop and look around once in awhile, you could miss it.
Chris, you're right, the Big Lebowski is a goldmine!
You're in no position disagree with me, boy. I got a loaded .45 here. You got pimples.
Lt. Colonel Frank Slade, SCENT OF A WOMAN 1992
Licensed by the goverment of the United Nations to kill groundhogs...
He's a Cinderella boy, former greenskeeper about to win at Augusta National...
Both from Caddyshack.
My favorite on the list is "Soylent Green is people!" I watched that special on Bravo and while I am sure the movie was serious, the moment that Charlton Heston delivers that line is so campy, I nearly fell out of my chair laughing.
I used this one in a Gospel reflection once:
"You make me want to be a better man"
AS GOOD AS IT GETS, 1997
Okay, I'm going to reveal my weakness for excessively violent action movies...
"Yippe-tay-ay-ee motherf-----r" DIE HARD
"Go ahead. Make my day."
MAGNUM FORCE
"I'm gonna get medieval on yo ass!"
PULP FICTION
"Get off my plane!"
AIR FORCE ONE
"It means Luca Brasi sleeps with the fishes."
THE GODFATHER
A few of my favorites:
"Be gone! You have no power in this place!"
--Wizard of Oz
"I'm bigger than you, I'm stronger than you, and I will always beat you."
--Mommie Dearest
Marlin: I promised I'd never let anything happen to him.
Dory: Hmm. That's a funny thing to promise.
Marlin: What?
Dory: Well you can't never let anything happen to him. Then nothing would ever happen to him. Not much fun for little Harpo.
--Finding Nemo
"I am a kittennnnnnnnn,"
--View from the Top
I suppose a couple of those aren't so memorable to mose people, though.
When you quoted this line:
"My name is Inigo Montoya. You kill my father. Prepare to die." THE PRINCESS BRIDE 1987
You forgot the best part: "Hallo"
And then there's the one word from Sam Wise Gamgi(sp): "Po-Ta-Toes!" The Lord of The Rings: The Two Towers
From THE BLUES BROTHERS: We're on a mission from God.
From IT'S A WONDERFUL LIFE: Every time a bell rings, an angel gets its wings.
