I'm Always the Last To Know

The following headline is from USA Today:

Pope upholds Communion, celibacy bans

OK, I want to know when the Church banned celibacy! Because nobody told me!

The ban doesn't apply to the New Orleans Province.

Oh well. There's still squirrel hunting.

And when in the world did he ban Communion, LOL?

What is the church coming to, I ask you.

Wait, I have a question. If the pope indeed did overturn the discipline of celibacy, that would only apply for secular priests, right? Prders with vows -- like the Jesuits -- would still follow the prescriptions of their founders, no? I've always wondered that. A Jesuit once told me that it wouldn't affect the order, only diocesans.

Santiago,

You're right. If celibacy were no longer required of priests, that would likely only hold for diocesan priests. Religious priests and brothers, who take a vow of chastity, would likely remain celibate.
