Amateurs!

Though not without some incredulity (seems some think that one cannot be an amateur Jesuit), I have joined the ranks of Amateur Catholics: The B-Team. It's a nice community for those of us that don't get 12,000 hits a day on our blogs! Also, Maureen Martin is one of the administrators and I'm still eager to learn the fine art of advent wreath making.

Already, there are a lot of people joining the ranks that nobody whose anybody has ever heard of. I've also revealed there why Saint Anthony might have something to do with my vocation. So, check it out!

Yeah, but he doesn't write books to live...he's motivated by the love of God and man, etc.

I should hope the ones who write books to live are motivated by the same things, especially since writing doesn't pay that much, even full time.

He also too that vow of poverty which means even if he wrote a best seller, the Jesuits would get rich and he would still be an amateur.

Technically, the book's not out yet. But, yes, I thought that might disqualify me. However, the powers that be decided to have me anyway.

Maybe they just wanted a token Jesuit, but the whole idea is so Gen-X I just had to be a part of it!

Besides, ask my sister-in-law, she'll tell you that I don't really work or anything!

Well -- so --- does being an Amateur Catholic raise your profile so that you end up getting book tours and theology on tap talks and the like? :-)

Hey Mark,

Tell the Jesuits they can take the Amateur Catholics on as an apostolate if they want. They get rich off your book, then they buy us beer for our speaking engagements, etc. LOL

Plus, everybody knows the real money is in the speaking engagements. LOL

Yeah, the real money comes when people actually pay you to come before them and promote your books.

Of course, us Am-Caths would want no part of that biz, because once you reach that level, people will expect you to refrain from drinking beer until after you speak. And we can't have that...

I always ask for transportation and lodging if necessary (if there's not a jesuit community nearby), that's all. Of course, they usually insist on giving you some money.

P.S. You can delete your posts, but I still get them in my e-mail inbox ;), so beware.

Wow, that was quick. The B-Team already has a nick-name..."Am-Caths." Cool.

And, Mark, didn't you technically edit the book? I don't think that counts for the Am-Caths, does it?

(Are you still getting nasty-notes in your com-box?)

Omis,

Nothing nasty, in this thread anyway, it's all in fun.

Paula Minaert and I did more than just edit, in the traditional sense. We wrote several chapters and put together the appendix. But since the book includes the work of numerous other people, I guess they decided to call us editors rather than authors.
